WELCOME PARENTS & STUDENTS!This year in music we will be learning about many aspects of music utilizing students' musical creativity while listening to, performing, and creating (including composing & arranging) music. In addition, third, fourth, and fifth graders will be learning musical notation and theory as they learn to play recorder/other instruments and sing many styles of music. A diversity of multi-cultural repertoire will be introduced to all grade levels as well. Composing and arranging music will incorporate music software such as Noteflight and classroom technology. It is important for students to be exposed to a wide variety of musical experiences, in as many of the roles possible in the music classroom setting to expand their innate musical intelligence. As a result, there may be some homework for the older students regarding musical vocabulary and concepts, practicing various musical skills, composing their own music, attendance of concerts, and providing musical interpretations of audio files on this website!

RECORDERS
A recorder is a Baroque wind instrument producing sounds somewhat comparable to a flute, piccolo, pipe, or penny whistle. It is an authentic orchestral instrument; and will be used to promote students' learning of various musical elements and instrumental techniques/skills such as tonguing, embouture, fingering, posture, etc., in addition to musical notation and theory. Students will have the opportunity to purchase their own recorder, if they do not already possess one. PLEASE DO NOT BUY DOLLAR STORE MODELS!
I will be sending a parent letter home that explains their advantages, cost for one or more recorders, and the responsibility students will need to take in owning and learning how to play one. I will order the recorders in bulk from a reputable dealer so that all may have a quality instrument with significant savings. Those who feel they cannot afford it, please call, write or email me regarding my lease plan--it is possible for all to participate! Your student and I are hoping you will take an active role in helping them be responsible with their instruments and for their musical achievement on them.

PRACTICE JOURNALS
DEAR 5TH GRADE BAND PARENTS & STUDENTS:
Once district-issued instruments have been released to your student, your student will need to practice at least 15 minutes a day in order to be successful at playing their instrument and keeping up in band class. We now meet just 40 minutes once a week, so it is crucial that our time in class be used learning and playing as an ensemble. I will not be able to give your student a private lesson on how to manipulate their instrument during class time in order for them to keep up with the rest of their band team. The band journals to the left can be used to keep track of practice time and the total points accrued on them will be used as extra credit in your student's band grade. Your signature will be required on the journals in order for your student to earn the extra credit homework points accrued on the log. Feel free to copy and print the .jpeg file below if your student has forgotten to pick up one of these logs for the week. As the logs are turned in each week, the points will be tallied and entered into my grade book. You and your student will be able to see their progress with their homework in the parent portal. MAKE SURE YOU LOOK IN THE THIRD TRIMESTER: T3, TO SEE THE POINTS YOUR STUDENT HAS EARNED! Your student will earn 10 points each week for having their instrument available for use in class (whether we use them or not!) In addition, theory homework will be given, and playing tests also will be utilized in assessing your student's musical progress. I am hoping to have an instrumental music open house/concert this spring, so you can see and hear the progress we are making thus far in class as an ensemble and why individual practicing is important to our entire band!
